On A Quest To Be The Best!

What’s New at Martial Arts for Life (Part 2)

In our last post we highlighted some of the many improvements we have made to our Adult Martial Arts program. Since then we’ve worked to upgrade our facility and our skills and knowledge base as instructors.

Most Recent Facility Improvements:

1.) Our brand new 1.5″ Pro Force Ultra flooring system was installed in June 2010. This matting system is TWICE the thickness as the average Karate mat and provides our students with newest, safest, and best flooring available for training in anything from Kickboxing to Grappling.

2.) New paint throughout the school. We have a dedicated professional Martial Arts facility, and we believe in keeping it looking top notch.

3.) New music! Hot new music mixes from GFMix to keep our classes moving!

Instructor & Staff Training: Taking our game to a Whole New Level

In order to help our students grow and be their best, we must grow and be our best!

1.) In June, Master Brugger and Mr. Caldwell attended a Muay Thai clinic taught by Kru Kaensak Sor Ploenjit at Tri State Martial Arts. Kru Kaensak is featured in the August 2010 issue of Black Belt Magazine.

1.) In July, Master & Mrs. Brugger attended the 2010 Martial Arts Super Conference and trained with some of the best Martial Artists and instructors in the world. We trained in workshops given by notables such as Matt Hughes, Lyoto Machida, John Hackleman, & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert Robert Drysdale. Here are some pictures from the event.

The Best Must Get Better!

We believe in providing the best possible program to our students and in constant and never ending improvement of that program!

In 2010 we have made many improvements to our Adult Martial Arts program. Here are some highlights:

1.) The addition of medicine balls and medicine ball workouts have improved our students’ core strength and overall athleticism and fitness levels.

2.) The addition of SPRI power bands and power band conditioning routines to our classes has led to increased muscle tone, strength, and total body sculpting.

3.) The addition of grappling through complimentary seminars on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts concepts has made our adult students more well-rounded in all ranges of self-defense and allowed them to cross train in other Martial Arts styles under our roof and for no additional tuition!

4.) We recently hosted a complimentary boxing clinic with a P.K.A. kickboxing champion and instructor Mr. P. which helped our students improve their technique and knowledge of boxing techniques.

5.) Martial Arts for Life hosted it’s first ever 90 Day Fitness Challenge, which saw our students take advantage of complimentary one on one nutritional guidance with our resident certified nutritional consultant Mrs. B. They also participated in some seriously intense workouts that had hearts pounding and sweat pouring. We had our most dedicated students lose 10 to 15 pounds and shape up just in time for summer with this program! This too was provided with no additional tuition or program costs.

6.) The addition of circuit training routines to our training regimen helped our students push themselves with high intensity interval training by moving through 1 minute workout stations including heavy bags, medicine balls, power bands, & more.

…that’s just for starters AND we’re not even half-way through 2010! We believe in providing an extraordinary value to our students and helping them reach their goals, whether they are increased strength & flexibility, increased self-defense skills, or anything in between. Oh, and this is all done in an environment that is based on traditional Martial Arts values such as respect, integrity, courtesy, & humility.

You haven’t gotten around to it?

It’s time to get A Round TUIT!

Have you ever said something like, “I really have to start doing something to get back in shape. I just haven’t gotten around to it, yet.” or “I’ve always wanted to try a Martial Arts class, I just never got a round to it.”?

Well, as you can see I’ve attached attached a “Round Tuit” to the top of this post and at the risk of sounding a bit silly…now you have no more excuses.

Seriously though, we hear people every day that have endless reasons (a.k.a excuses) for why they are physically inactive, overweight, out of shape, or just don’t like the way they look and feel. The truth is, no one has time to work out, everybody has important responsibilities such as a job, a significant other, a home to take care of, etc. I know one thing for sure though, if you wait for everything to be perfect in your life before you start training, you will never get started.

The difference between the people that look and feel great because they lead an active, healthy lifestyle and those that don’t is simple. Active and healthy people have decided that they will MAKE time for themselves. They realize that  ultimately, there is nothing more important than their health and well-being. Consider this: How effective can you be at your job or as a spouse or parent when you don’t feel your best?

So now that you’ve gotten “a Round TUIT” isn’t it time you decide to make a change for the better? Give us a call, we specialize in beginners.

Simple Diet Plan

Here’s a simple diet plan to help get you back on track.

as compiled by Master Steve D.

Morning 6 am – 10 am: Low fat, low sugar yogurt, one serving fresh fruit, hot beverage with no cream or sugar (artificial sweeteners are acceptable).

Afternoon 12 pm – 2 pm: Roll-up “wrap” sandwich (turkey, chicken, beef, tuna are all fine). Salt and pepper to taste and a hot beverage with no cream or sugar (artificial sweeteners are acceptable). Lettuce and tomato or a similar vegetable is fine.

Late afternoon 4 pm – 5 pm: Low fat yogurt and a hot beverage or a serving of fresh fruit or even a small salad with low fat dressing will do.

Dinner 7 pm – 9 pm: One serving of green leafy salad with carrots and cucumbers and low fat dressing, One portion (the size of your palm) of steak or chicken or fish or pork or similar (grilled with salt and pepper to taste) and a green vegetable (no butter), salt and pepper to taste.

Late Night 10 pm – 12 am: If you’re hungry, yogurt or fruit or oatmeal with artificial sweetener.

Drink a glass of sparkling water (or tap water) with every meal and as much bottled water or hot beverages as you like all day.

If at any point you feel weak, irritable or dizzy, add an additional portion of yogurt, fruit or protein.

Expect to lose 2-3 pounds per week with this plan. If you lose more or less, adjust your intake to achieve these results.

If you have any pre-existing conditions or are on any type of medication, please check with your physician prior to following this meal plan. Remember to check with your Health Professional prior to beginning this or any meal plan.

Holiday Eating: 5 Tips for Healthy Holidays!

Tips for Surviving the Holiday Season!

Did you know the average adult gains 7 pounds during the Holiday Season?!

Below are some tips for healthy eating during a very challenging time of the year – the Holidays! We all know that food (and drink) can be an important part of many holiday celebrations. It can be quite challenging not to overindulge, especially when anticipating a new exercise and diet plan that you’ll start January 1st, 2010! Rest assured you can enjoy your favorite holiday foods and still maintain your weight.

1.) Be physically active. Everyone’s schedule gets hectic around the Holidays with parties, shopping, visiting family, etc. Physical activity such as brisk walking, jogging, or cycling can help regulate your appetite and burn extra calories from holiday eating.

2.) Decide in Advance (D.I.A.). Before attending a holiday party or event decide in advance what foods are important to you to eat, how many drinks you’re going to have, and what desserts you would like to partake in. Don’t allow yourself to stray from your plan – moderation and self-discipline are the keys here.

3.) Choose beverages wisely. Alcoholic drinks are high in calories – some liquors contain up to 450 calories per glass. If you must drink, limit yourself to one or two drinks per occasion and try to choose “light” beers and wine drinks.

4.) Don’t go to a party hungry. Enjoy a light snack prior to arriving at a party. If you go to a party on an empty stomach you are much more likely to overeat and make poor food choices. Consider having a piece of fruit or a cup of yogurt before you head off to celebrate.

5.) Chew gum. This is a simple little trick that can help you avoid diving into the bowls of snacks or buffet table.

The Health Risks of Diet Soda

This was originally featured on AOL Health and was written by Deborah R. Huso
Diet Cola

Diet Cola

If you think you’re doing yourself a favor by drinking diet soda instead of the real deal, think again. It’s true you may be protecting your waistline from empty calories, but new research suggests you may be beating up your kidneys instead.

Over the weekend, researchers from the Nurse’s Health Study  in Boston released findings that indicate women who drink two or more diet sodas a day experienced a 30 percent drop in kidney function over the course of a two decades long study. More than 3,000 women participated in the study, the median age being 67. Lead researcher Julie Lin, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a physician at Brigham Women’s Hospital says the outcomes were especially startling because the women surveyed all had health kidney function at the start of the research.

After critically analyzing the beverage intake of study participants, researchers found those who drank two or more diet sodas daily had a significant dip in the kidneys’ glomerular filtration rate, which measures kidney function. Natural aging generally results in a decreased filtration rate of about 1 mL per minute per year after age 40. In contrast, the rate of those who consumed diet soda significantly decreased by 3mL per minute per year. The study showed no link between decreased kidney function and other beverages or any decreased function in women who had less than two diet sodas a day.

This doesn’t mean your kidneys are safe, however, if you opt for regular sodas. A study published earlier this year in PLoS ONE, a journal of the Public Library of Science showed that women drinking two or more cans of regular soda a day are nearly twice as likely to suffer from early signs of kidney disease as non-soda drinkers. Researchers don’t understand the cause for certain but suspect it has to do with the intake of large amounts of high fructose corn syrup.

With some 26 million Americans suffering from chronic kidney disease, it’s obviously become a national health problem. While studies to date on the relationship between kidney function and soda (diet or regular) have been small, they add more fuel to the fire for cutting soda intake, even if you’re a diet drinker. When it comes to your health, water is always the best beverage.

Definitely some food for thought. Even drinking diet soda a few times a week seems to be a poor choice. If you’re serious about changing your diet and appearance consider becoming part of our team. Nutritional consulting is included (at no extra charge) with all our adult programs.
