10 Tips for Healthier Eating

1. Drink lots of water. It is recommended to drink half your weight in ounces every day. Example: If you weigh 160 pounds, then you should drink 80 ounces of water per day.

2. Don’t shop for food when you’re hungry. You will generally choose less healthy food and buy too much of it.

3. Snack frequently on healthy foods throughout the day. (Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, etc.)

4. Take smaller portions and eat slower. You’ll end up eating less and enjoying it more. Remember, one of the main reasons that we overeat is because it takes a while for the stomach to tell the brain that it is full.

5. Avoid trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils and saturated fats). There’s a quick test to determine whether trans fats are contained in a product. If, for example, a margarine or peanut butter stays in a solid form at room temperature, it has trans fat in it.

6. Choose a diet high in complex carbs. Whole grains, beans, legumes and fresh fruits and vegetables should make up the majority of your food intake.

7. Minimize processed foods. A good rule of thumb is, the longer the list of ingredients it contains, the less of it you should eat.

8. Minimize fried food and condiments. This is where the majority of people usually consume massive amounts of excess empty calories.

9. If you cheat, cheat small and then get back on track.

10. If you’d like, ignore this list one day a week and eat what you want — in moderation, of course.

Martial Arts for Life: Discipline at the Plate

“Don’t dig your grave with your knife and fork” – English Proverb

Having “discipline at the plate” is a key trait of successful hitters in baseball. It refers to having the self-discipline to only swing at quality pitches that can be put into play and lay off pitches that are poor quality or out of the strike zone. Hitters that have this characteristic are coveted by major league teams and often enjoy great success.

Of course, we’re talking about another type of discipline at the plate here, one that leads to success with regard to one’s health and longevity. This is the act of exercising discipline when eating. According to the TIME Magazine article, “Eat Less, Live Longer?” decades of calorie-restriction studies involving organisms ranging from microscopic yeast to rhesus monkeys have shown that reducing the amount of food consumed has extended the life spans of these organisms by as much as 50%.

One of the healthiest countries in the world is Okinawa. Nearly 30% of Okinawans live to be 100!  The Okinawans have a saying that goes like this “Hari Hachi Bu”, which roughly translated means “80 percent full.” The idea is that you never stuff yourself. Instead of eating until you’re full, you eat until you are not hungry. This takes practice and discipline but the benefits are significant.

It should also be noted that the traditional Okinawan diet consists of portions made of a bowl of cooked food and a fruit. According to author Stefan Anitei, “Okinawans eat daily seven portions of vegetables and fruits, seven of cereals and two of soy products. They take various portions of fish weekly and very sporadically meat and dairy products. Overall, their diet is low in calories and contains a lot of vegetables.”

To put this discipline into practice,  try using a smaller plate for all your meals. This makes it seem that there is more food on the plate. Research shows us that by doing this, you will automatically eat less.

Most entrées at restaurants are oversized. Try sharing one entrée with someone else or only eating half and taking the rest to go. Replace a 12” sandwich with a 6”, etc. Remember, instead of eating until you are full; eat until you are no longer hungry.

When it comes to your health, a little bit of a discipline goes a long way.

“If you take care of your stomach the first 50 years of your life, your stomach will take care of you the next 50…” – Unknown

5 Quick Tips for Weight Loss!

Here’s 5 Quick Tips for Weight Loss

1.) Don’t Skip Breakfast.Your body expects to be refueled a few times each day, so when you skip breakfast you may feel so hungry that when lunch time comes, you over-eat or maybe you choose foods that are not the healthiest choices.

2.) Stay Hydrated. We need to drink a lot of water to keep our bodies (and this includes our metabolism) working properly. We need about 6-8 eight-ounce glasses of fresh water each day. This will ensure that the 60-100 trillion cells in the body receive their daily-needed ration of water in order to maintain efficient digestion, metabolism and waste removal.

3.) Eat More! We’re talking three good snacks and three healthful meals. Skip the empty calories of chips and dip and substitute mixed nuts—especially almonds. This type of snack will satisfy your craving for something crunchy while helping to build muscle.

4.) Do Resistance Training. Lift Weights or use resistance bands. The muscles you build will not only improve your performance, they’ll stoke your metabolism so you burn calories long after your workout is over.

5.) Avoid Empty Calories. Pass on sodas, alcoholic beverages, cookies, cakes, candy, etc. Enjoy healthier alternatives most of the time – and when you do splurge – do so reasonably!

The Perfect Time for Martial Arts?

The Perfect Time for Martial Arts is Now!

A recently publishes article by world renowned Master Instructor Dave Kovar discussed why now is the perfect time to get involved in Martial Arts training. Below are some of the main reasons he provided as to why the average person needs Martial Arts training now more than ever.

Stress: With everything that’s happening in this country and around the world, the stress level of the average person is dramatically higher than in the past. Unmanaged stress can be extremely detrimental to our health, our relationships, and even our job productivity. There aren’t many things that can reduce stress better than an intense Martial Arts class. Many times our students come to class stressed from the activities of daily life, then leave with a completely different mindset at the end of class.

Stay-cations: Many families who are curbing their travel plans this year and who consider their training as a mini, twice-a-week getaways without leaving town.

Obesity: Martial Arts is fitness with a purpose. There are few activities that offer the fitness benefits of a good Martial Arts class. Fitness has three components: strength, flexibility, and endurance. Martial arts training demands a balance between the three. Therefore, a person who trains in Martial Arts will find his/her weakest areas greatly improved. And, because they develop greater balance of strength, flexibility and endurance, children will be less likely to injure themselves while participating in other athletic activities.

Athletic Enhancement: There’s a reason ever professional sports team in every major sport supplements its training with Martial Arts. Martial Arts training offers several advantages. It is amazingly effective at enhancing general coordination because it uses every part of the body in a balanced way. Upper body, lower body, right side, left side, forward movement, lateral movement and rotational movement are all included in Martial Arts training.

Relationships: Human interaction counterbalances technology. In these days of working at home, 500 cable channels, Twitter and Facebook, many modern Americans need more live social interaction. At the Martial Arts Academy, students find themselves surrounded by positive, high quality, encouraging people (instructors and co-students alike) who help bring out their best and keep them focused on the prize.

Some very insightful observations from a true leader in our industry. Master K. also has an amazing book on parenting now available from Amazon.com called, “A Dad’s Toolbox for Better Parenting.”

Interested vs. Committed

Have you noticed the abundance of weight loss & fitness advertisements that continue to bombard the general public?

These are advertisements for products that include pills, diets, meal plans, workout DVDs, books, gym memberships, and fitness gadgets. The question most people ask is, “Does any of that stuff actually work?” The answer is, NONE of it works and ALL of it works. Yes, you read that right. The simple fact is absolutely nothing works unless you are COMMITTED to getting a result and most people are merely INTERESTED. Let’s take a look at the difference…

This is actually really simple. People who are INTERESTED in achieving a goal will do whatever is CONVENIENT to achieve that goal. What that means is folks who are interested in losing weight, getting back in shape, etc. will go to the gym or take a fitness class if they have time and it fits nicely into their schedule. If they are tired or have an opportunity to do something that is more fun or exciting they will choose that over exercise. “Interested” men and women will eat healthy as long as it’s easy and convenient for them (and how often is that?). This type of approach to diet and exercise is why 1 out of every 3 people in the U.S. is overweight (34% according to the Center for Disease Control’s most recent statistics).

The other side of the coin is folks who are COMMITTED. Men and women who are committed to their health, fitness and weight loss goals will do WHATEVER IT TAKES to achieve these goals whether it is convenient or not. You will not hear committed people complain about not having the time or energy to work out. They will get up an hour earlier to go for a jog or give up an hour of leisure time to workout. Committed people will discipline themselves to eat healthy a vast majority of the time and enjoy unhealthy food and beverages in moderation. Now, what type of results would you expect committed people to get in terms of their health, fitness, finances, relationships, etc?

When it comes to your health and fitness don’t be INTERESTED, be COMMITTED!
